About - The Ciudad Barrios cooperative was founded in 1972, in the hills of the Cacahuatique Mountain range of northwestern El Salvador. It was awarded El Salvador’s National Environmental Prize in 1998 for its work protecting the local rain forest habitat. The 1000-member cooperative makes substantial contributions to their community from the profits of their sales to the multinational. They have donated land and building supplies for the Los Gutiérrez Education Center. The cooperative is currently considering new ways to spend its higher incomes to benefit the poorest members of their community.
